I feel like this year I have learned SO MUCH about growing a business with blogging. I wish I knew so many of these things sooner, and although I feel like I have grown immensely, I also feel like I still have so much more to learn!
Colten said something to me sometime two years ago that really stuck with me, and made me push out of my comfort zone. I was getting tons of emails about collaborating or working with companies, and I felt like I was drowning in emails...BUT, I had nothing to show for it. I wasn't making any money, and I felt like I was so behind on many of the posts I had to publish! I didn't want to hire a photographer, because then I would have been out money by paying them to take my photos. But I didnt want to force Colten to go out and take my photos either (they would have sucked too hehe) I felt stuck, and I wasn't happy.
The companies that wrote me, usually worded their emails with "We would love to GIFT you product in return for a blog post/social posts"....and although gifts are nice, they don't pay bills and they don't pay for my hard work. I was always too afraid to ask to get paid for my work, because I didn't want to lose out on any opportunities! That's when Colten said this, "YOU DON'T GET WHAT YOU DON'T ASK FOR".
Those simple words I had heard before suddenly resonated with me. I wouldn't ever get paid for my work, if I didn't ask for it! It didn't hurt to ask for companies to pay my rate! I was putting in so much work into my photos, and I deserved something for my following/and time right? So I started telling companies my rates, I started pretty low, and it surprised me...they were more than willing to pay!
I realized then, that it never hurts to stand up for yourself...and set rates for what your work is worth! They are COMING TO YOU, so you tell them what you're worth...and if they don't want to pay you, then move on or negotiate something that benefits BOTH parties! :)
Just remember to be fair with what you truly are putting out there! Take high quality images, be honest with reviews, and post about products you truly love or use!!!! :) I believe it standing by your brand, and posting about products that represent YOU!
