Oh the joys of motherhood…When we enter the crazy journey of carrying, birthing and raising a child, we learn many terms that we’d be previously unable to define…Like perineal tear, sitz bath, and for many of us, unfortunately, also diastasis recti. 

 

What is diastasis recti?? According to the Mayo Clinic, “During pregnancy, the growing uterus stretches the muscles in the abdomen. This can cause the two large parallel bands of muscles that meet in the middle of the abdomen to separate — a condition called diastasis recti or diastasis recti abdominis. Diastasis recti might cause a bulge in the middle of the abdomen where the two muscles separate.” In mama terms, it’s the frustrating pooch that seems like it never goes away, even after losing all the baby weight.

 

With my first pregnancy I had very little separation, but after having our second baby, I noticed the abdominal separation & was determined to find a way to fix it. That’s when I discovered Every Mother & started on their 12 week Reclaim program in August to help rebuild & tone my core muscles the right way. Guess what...CRUNCHES WERE NOT THE ANSWER! I have loved being able stream the workouts on my iPad using the mobile app, and being able to do them easily in the comfort of my home! Every Mother has three separate programs: Prepare, Reclaim & Surpass. The Prepare program is for expecting mothers who want a safe and effective program to follow during pregnancy. Reclaim (the program I followed), is for mothers who are less than 6 months PP, or who have a diagnosis of DR. Surpass is for mothers who are over 6 months PP, have healed DR and / or want to prevent it entirely and want a sustainable fitness program to follow. I did the Reclaim Program workouts 4 times a weeek. Many of the workouts are 20 minutes or less, and have easy to follow instructions. I thoroughly enjoyed doing them, and felt sore after every one! (That’s how you know they work!) The workouts are not what you would imagine they would be for abdominal separation too! I was pleasantly surprised by the amount of simple movements that made a world of difference in repairing my muscle separation. I was easily able to log in to my account to access the workouts, and get step by step instructions on every single one. I felt empowered by the Every Mother community, and loved having the tools I received from my membership.

 

 

I started the program 3 weeks before we went on our Hawaii vacation in September, and I am so glad I did! I felt much more confident in a swimsuit, and noticed even after those first 3 weeks using the Reclaim program that my abdominal separation was much less noticeable, and my abs were finally coming together. The workouts target every area of your body, but do so in a way that also helps heal and tone your abdominal muscles. Being a mom is already a tough job, and we don’t have time to try a million different products and regimens for our bodies that may or may not be effective. That is why I am so glad I found Every Mother’s program, and I have been recommending it to all my mama friends who suffer from DR, or who just want an awesome fitness program to follow! 

 

Throughout the program, I felt stronger everywhere…and could see more definition in my arms and legs as well as my abs. The workouts continued to motivate me, and push me harder each week!!! I definitely had days I missed, and moments that I wasn’t feeling up to doing it. I pushed through it, and each day that I did…I felt better and better! I don’t need to be super model thin, or have muscles that could lift heavier than my husband…I just want to feel and look healthy, and set a good example of a strong body image for my girls.

 

I finished my 12 weeks in October, but have continued to do the workouts since. I have healed my DR, and continue see my abdominal muscles toning up with every exercise.
